The ARTEKino Festival is an innovative online film festival presented by ARTE.tv and Festival Scope aimed at movie goers from all over Europe. The festival strives to celebrate and promote European films from new filmmakers to larger audiences in less accessible countries.
This year the ARTEKino Selection is also available free at ARTE.tv. Each month a new film is featured representing the richness and diversity of European cinema.
In July, the ARTEKino Selection features Claire Denis’s 2008 film 35 Shots of Rum, currently streaming onARTE.tv. For August, Tereza Nvotová’s powerful debut feature Filthy, explores hard-hitting issues of rape, trauma and secondary victimisation. In September ARTEKino presents the potent real-world feminist fable Sibel featuring a mesmerising performance by Damla Sönmez.

Seventeen-year-old Lena’s carefree world comes crashing down when she is raped at home by her maths teacher. The attacker calmly walks away, but Lena ends up in a psychiatric hospital. But even there she can’t bring herself to tell anyone what happened to her, since it doesn’t appear the staff are prepared to combat secondary victimisation. Tereza Nvotová offers up a drama which clearly demonstrates that rape only marks the beginning of a series of distressing experiences and brings to light an often-marginalised problem exacerbated by inadequate professional help. The oppressive subject matter acquires form as an assured study of the main character and of those around her, their contours nuanced by Marek Dvořák’s camerawork and by Dominika Morávková, whose Lena comes to realise that only she can find the strength that lies within her.
Sans jamais le dire
Au plus près d’une jeune fille victime d’un viol puis d’une institution psychiatrique brutale, la jeune réalisatrice slovaque Tereza Nvotova signe un bouleversant film-vérité.
Belle et réservée, Lena, 17 ans, a grandi entre des parents aimants, mais accaparés par un fils cadet handicapé. Entraînée par Roza, sa copine plus délurée, elle commence timidement à voler de ses propres ailes. Jusqu’au jour où, dans sa chambre, alors que sa mère et son frère se trouvent à la maison, elle est violée par son prof de maths, jeune enseignant charmeur venu sous le prétexte d’un cours particulier. Traumatisée, la jeune fille se mure dans le silence, puis tente de s’ouvrir les veines. Sa mère, paniquée, la confie alors à une unité psychiatrique pour adolescents. La violence de l’institution se superpose à la souffrance, plus que jamais indicible, qui coupe Lena d’elle-même et des autres.
Électrochoc
Avec un sens très sûr du cadre et une hypersensibilité sensorielle qui nous plonge corps et âme dans les abîmes intérieurs de Lena, la jeune réalisatrice slovaque Tereza Nvotova signe un premier long métrage entre rage et délicatesse. Dénonçant la tranquille impunité du violeur comme la psychiatrie de son pays, qui prétend soigner la souffrance à coups d’électrochocs et dénie aux patients le droit à la parole, elle compose une suite de séquences au réalisme éprouvant. Elle restitue aussi avec une douceur pleine d’empathie la lutte pied à pied de son héroïne (bouleversante Dominika Moravkova) pour survivre. Un film-vérité, porté par un casting irréprochable, dont l’émouvante Anna Siskova (la mère), et des adolescents hospitalisés jouant leur propre rôle.
